Healthy Relationships

This workshop explores facets of relationships with parents, friends and partners. Topics of discussion may include:

  • aspects of a healthy relationship
  • aspects of abusive/negative relationships
  • why people decide to become sexually active or abstain negotiating
  • behaviour within the relationship

Anatomy, Physiology and Puberty

This workshop educates participants on the basics of reproductive anatomy and its functions.

  • female & male reproductive system
  • menstrual cycle
  • models of sexual arousal and response
  • conception

Contraceptive/Birth Control Options This workshop allows participants to learn about different methods of contraception with methods available for observation. Methods covered include:

Hormonal

  • Oral contraception ("The Pill")
  • Injectable Contraceptive (Depo Provera)
  • The Ring (NuvaRing)
  • The Patch (Ortho Evra)

Barrier

  • Male condom
  • Female condom
  • Contraceptive Sponge
  • Spermicides
  • Diaphragm
  • Cervical cap
  • Lea's Shield

Other

  • Abstinence
  • Natural Family Planning
  • I.U.D. (Intrauterine Device)

Pregnancy Options
This workshop provides information on all options available in the event of an unplanned pregnancy: abortion, adoption and parenting.

Abortion

  • discussion of the history of abortion law
  • discussion of facts and myths
  • discussion of the pro-choice philosophy of decision making
  • discussion of procedure

Adoption

  • discussion of the changes in adoption in the past 50 years
  • discussion of procedure to place a child for adoption
  • discussion of procedure to adopt a child
  • discussion of community resources

Parenting

  • body changes during pregnancy
  • fetal development
  • creating birth plans
  • sexuality during pregnancy
  • labour and delivery stages
  • financial considerations
  • questions to consider before planning to become a parent
 

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs/STDs)
This workshop educates participants on the various infection, infestations and diseases that may be transmitted through sexual intercourse. Topics may include:

  • Bacterial & viral infections
  • Incubation periods
  • Symptoms/ being Asymptomatic
  • Testing & Treatment
  • Talking to a partner about getting tested and testing positive
  • Condom use

Parents for Healthy Sexuality
This workshop helps parents to become the primary educators regarding sexuality for their children and teenagers. Topics may include:

  • examination of your own feelings and values about sexuality
  • discussion of what messages each parent feels is important to pass on to her/his child or teen
  • becoming an approachable parent
  • body image and self esteem
  • answering the questions
  • community resources
  • getting accurate information on sexuality concerns

Sexuality for People with Learning Disabilities
This workshop helps participants to understand appropriateness of different behaviours and basics of reproduction and maintaining sexual health. Topics may include:

  • What is sex?
  • What could happen if people have sex?
  • What makes you want to date someone?
  • Important parts of a healthy relationship (mutuality, consent and respect)
  • Different ways that you touch your self and others
  • Appropriate ways and places of showing affection
  • Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender people and relationships
  • How babies are made and grow
  • Responsibilities of being a parent
  • Questions and answers

A note regarding our Fee for Service:

PPWR is proud to be a pro-choice, charitable organization offering unique and accessible sexual health education services in our community. PPWR does not receive funding from the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health (formerly Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada), and is not a United Way member. We ask schools and not-for-profit organizations to make a financial contribution toward the cost of our education presentations, at a suggested rate of $30 an hour. Your support is greatly appreciated!
