Sexploration!

A production of PPWR’s Peer Theatre Education Program

What is Peer Theatre Education?

Since 1998, Planned Parenthood Waterloo Region’s Peer Theatre Education Program has been educating and entertaining local youth on various issues of healthy sexuality.

We live in a world where being armed with sexual health knowledge can mean the difference between life and death. It is important that youth are well informed – but that information can be overwhelming, and sometimes boring. Receiving sexual health information through live theatre can help to reach youth who may otherwise not respond to such information.

But what makes PPWR’s Peer Theatre Education Program even stronger is that youth get the information from people their own age. The cast is comprised of local high school and university students - a population that the audience can relate to, and feel comfortable receiving sexual health information from.

What is Sexploration?

Sexploration is PPWR’s latest addition to the Peer Theatre Education Program. After a successful premiere in September 2004, we have been touring the production to senior public and secondary schools, and community groups in Waterloo Region. The 2006-2007 academic year will mark the third production year of Sexploration!

Sexploration consists of a series of vignettes that follow the journey of two main characters: “Boy” and “Girl”. On their quest for sexual knowledge Boy and Girl encounter many issues along the way, personified by interesting and humorous characters. Sexual health issues that are addressed include:

  • sexually transmitted infections
  • pregnancy options
  • the media’s portrayal of sexuality
  • birth control options
  • healthy relationships
  • puberty
  • LGBTQ issues
  • masturbation

By the end of the play, Boy and Girl - as well as the audience - have gained a good deal of knowledge that will aid them in making informed decisions regarding sexuality.
